However, before 1970, there were lots of Hakka people living at the foot of the hill. They were struggling for a bare existence. We are in Tseng Tau Village at the bottom of the hill, listening to the story told by the village head about the changes of their life during the past decades.

The villagers were leading a simple farming life until the 1950s. However, after the WWII, the government urgently needed land to develop the econmy and accommodate the infux of refugees from the mainland. The villagers then had to give up their farmland and move to the hillside.They have abandoned their traditional way of life since then. In this episode, we ask the village heads of Ho Pui Village to tell us the details of the changes of Tsuen Wan.

Before 1980, apart from a few villages near Yuen Long, all other villages were Hakka. However, in the 1980s, the government relocated the villagers along the Tuen Mun River and built many high-rise buildings to accommodate tens of thousands of people. In this way, Tuen Mun metamorphises into a modern city.

However, it remains relatively unknown to most of us. In fact Luk Keng is a Hakka village with over 300 years of history, containing numerous historical sites and unique ecological features.

It was was founded in 1906 and the whole village was converted to Christianuty after 1912. As a branch of the Basler Church, it was using Hakka as a medium of preaching until the 1990s. Recently, it also tries to revive the Hakka language in its church.

Although it belongs to the Shatin District, it is not linked to Shatin with roads, but only accessible through Kowloon or Sai Kung. Because of its remote geographical location and lower temperature, the farming life was harsch because of the poor yield. Most villagers migrated or moved into the city, yet a few eldery villagers enjoy their retirement here because of the cooler climate.

This means that for a long time in the past, the villagers had to walk to Shatin Station to get on the train.

As the environment is ideal and the villagers are friendly, it attracts many foreigners to live here. Because of this, the CNY celebration even includes Western culture elements.

Therefore the women could only stay at home to take care of their children. In order to generate more income for the family, many of them kept pigs or poultry and were busy all day long. Even the elder children had to participate in the work. Today, I invite my firend, Mr. Cheung, who I knew since we were teens to share his experience about raising pigs.
